The Pataleshwar Cave Temple, Pune,India

The Pataleshwar Cave Temple is a rock-cut cave temple, carved out in the 8th century. This Historical Temple is located in Jangli Maharaj Road in Shivaji Nagar, Pune. The entire temple is hewn out of a single block of stone, and houses gigantic pillars, a shrine of Lord Shiva (also known as Pataleshwar) and a Nandi.

The Pataleshwar cave temple was dedicated to the Lord Pataleshwar (God of Underworld). The most striking feature are cave temple is the unique sound of the bells.
This religious shrine on Jungli Maharaj Road, housed in caves, that dates back to 700-800 AD has rather grand statues of Nandi, Sita, Ram, Lakshman, Lakshmi,Ganesh and a host of other Hindu Gods and Goddesses located in the cube-shaped room at the heart of the temple.The cave temple also houses the museum, which is listed in the Guinness Book of Records. The main attraction of the museum is the grain of rice, that has around 5,000 characters inscribed on it.

The cave remains open from 8 am to 5.30 pm in the evening, can be reached from any destination in Pune with the help of auto rickshaws.
