Sinhagad formerly known as kondana was one of  the  most impregn able forts in western India. Sinhagad is 25 Kms. from Pune. It is situated on a hill rising 800 metres above the surrounding countryside. Due to its height, the fort also serves as a popular trekking destination for the people of Pune. The trek from Katraj to Sinhagad is especially very famous. Today, Sinhagad fort stands mostly in ruins. The fort has been the site of many important battles, most notably the battle of Sinhagad in 1670. It was also strategically located at the center of a string of other forts such as Rajgad, Purandar and Torna.


Sinhagad is a popular weekend destination for many residents of Pune, with some enthusiasts trekking to the top of the fort from the base near Sinhagad village. Sinhagad fort is a steep and narrow two way road from the base of the fort to the top. The local municipal transport service, the PMT runs buses every hour from Swargate and Shanivarwada to the Sinhagad foothills. The climbing way from either side of the fort can be covered in around an hour, however it gets slippery in the rainy season. Shared taxi services to the base as well as the top of the mountain are also available.
